Welcome back to Guardians of the Faith, a teaching series from the Assembly of Bishops in the Global Methodist Church. Each week, we’re hearing from our bishops about what it means to lead with integrity, faithfulness, and vision. This week, Bishop Greenway takes us back to the roots of our movement and explores how history, tradition, and doctrine shape the vital role of the bishop today.
This Week's Focus: Historically-Rooted
In a world filled with competing voices, the Global Methodist Church is committed to holding fast to the apostolic faith—just as our spiritual forebears did.
This week’s lesson explores:
The bishop’s role is inherently a teaching office, responsible for guarding and transmitting the apostolic faith.
John Wesley, though not titled a bishop, led the Methodist movement through theological clarity and doctrinal faithfulness.
The GMC has returned to a non-residential episcopacy to prioritize spiritual and doctrinal leadership across the global connection.
Contend for the Faith: A Call to Teach and Guard the Truth
"Contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. –Jude 1:3 (NSRVA)
This week’s video reminds us that faithful leadership is not just about administration—it’s about guarding the faith passed down through generations. From the apostles to Wesley, and now through our bishops, the Church has always needed leaders who can teach sound doctrine, uphold theological integrity, and equip others for the work of ministry. Today, we recommit ourselves to that legacy.
Reflection Questions
How does the history of our movement shape your understanding of faithful leadership?
In what ways is your local church grounded in sound doctrine and Wesleyan theology?
Why is it essential for the Church to guard the apostolic faith in every generation?
Spend time this week in prayer and reflection. Ask God to show you how to live a life that reflects His holiness in every space you enter.
Closing Prayer
Gracious God, we thank You for the legacy of faith passed down through the generations. Strengthen our resolve to guard and proclaim the truth of Your Word. Raise up teachers and leaders in our time who will stand firm in doctrine and lead with wisdom, humility, and courage. May we be faithful to Your mission as we seek to make disciples in every place.
Amen.
